| What should I know about using images from this and other web pages? |
| Answer: |
| Many people are unclear about www copyright issues. Basically, the www is just like anywhere else, you can't take things that aren't yours without permission. Sure downloading images off of the web and using them in you own page is easy to do; but so is shoplifting. And while most view shoplifting as a bigger offence, both are illegal and unethical. Those that make their livelihood in the competitive field of stock photography are not going to take unauthorized use of their artwork lightly.
All images are copyright protected as soon as they are taken whether or not there is a copyright notice on them or not. While not necessary, a copyright notice says "Attention, this image is my artwork and I'm making it clear that I don't want others taking my work without permission". Get the official skinny from the source, see The Copyright Website. News groups on www authoring cover this issue frequently as well. While some people don't care if you steal their code or images, others do and the point is to ask first and respect the reply. Dr. James Wood |
