How to get octopuses to leave their lairs

Question:
How to get octopuses to leave their lairs
Answer:
There was a discussion on this subject on FastMoll - one of the two cephalopod list servers. Anyway, this little jewel came from my advisor, Dr. Ron O'Dor.

We filled plastic squirt bottles with rock salt and shot the hypersaline product into octopus dens to encourage them to come out and be weighed. One bottle lasted throughout a dive. Bermuda fishermen (not fishers in this case) told us of a simpler traditional method that required no extra equipment and was more fun to refill. They drank beer, dived and urinated in the octopus dens. I have not tested or even directly observed this interaction between cephalopods and humans, but it sounds plausible, if not comfortable.
