What does the mucous coating do?

**Thanks to Smoke Jaguar for submitting this question**
Question:
I've heard of some cephs that produce a mucous coating for protection. Can/does that extend a cephs' shore leave, or do you they have to be drinking in extra water to balance the lost fluid?
Answer:
Cephalopods are active and use much more oxygen than their molluscan relatives. They have gills which don't work very well on land. However, they also take in some oxygen from their skin as long as they stay wet. This helps them last a little longer when out of the water. It also helps reduce friction when swimming. On land it would also likely stick to them better so they don't dry out as fast.
