The Physician Payments Sunshine Act (Open Payments), a part of the Affordable Care Act, is requiring domestic drug and device manufacturers to report any payments made to physicians or academic medical centers to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), with certain exceptions.

As of June 1st, UTMB clinicians may begin registering with CMS so that they may review their payment information that will be made available for individual review July 1st mid-July [per recent update from CMS], and publicly available in September 2014. It is important that physicians review their data starting in July to ensure the accuracy of data reported on CMS's website.  UTMB's Conflicts of Interest office will be providing online materials and in-person training sessions to help faculty members understand their responsibilities under the regulations.  Find a walkthrough of the physician registration process here.

The implementation of Open Payments is an important step towards greater transparency in the provision of health care services. I encourage each of you to familiarize yourself with the regulations and to register with CMS, which enables you to review data reported regarding your activities.
