What does the Diversity Council do?

The Diversity Council is an institutional think-tank that provides oversight and implementation accountability for the various aspects of the institution’s diversity and inclusion (D&I) strategic plan. Council members are representational thought leaders who drive the institution’s D & I effort based on a clear charter and operating with the full and visible support of senior executive leadership.

How is it organized?

The council is organized into four subcommittees which mirror the operational structure of the institution. Each subcommittee is led by two co-chairs who serve a 1-3 year term.

What is the Scope of Work?

The diversity council focuses on the following cycles of impact:

Academic Subcommittee:

Cultural Competence Education & Disparities Research: Strengthen D&I initiatives in UTMB educational programs and support the use of evidence-based research to address health disparities. Target audience is students and faculty.

Health System Subcommittee:

Care Delivery & Community Partnership: Promote community centrism and culturally appropriate care delivery. Target audience is clinical and clinical support staff.

Business & Finance Subcommittee:

Measurement, Tracking & Accountability: Evaluate and measure the effect of UTMB’s D&I programs on the overall goals of the institution, including the tracking of spending with historically underutilized business (HUBs). Target audience is institutional support staff.

Infrastructure Subcommittee:

Recognition & Engagement: Promote diversity awareness and foster an inclusive environment through communications and marketing efforts. Target audience is institution-wide.

Talent Management & Diversity: Optimize people development and talent pipeline planning efforts to underscore the value of diversity and inclusion. This area of impact cuts across all four subcommittees.

How often does the council meet?

Currently, the council holds a 1.5 hour monthly luncheon meeting on the third Wednesday of every month. Between meetings, conference calls, email correspondence and informal face-to-face meetings may occur to further the work of the council.

What are the responsibilities of subcommittee co-chairs?

Co-chairs work to lead the assigned scope of work within the current fiscal year term. Each co-chair may be appointed for a one-year or two-year term and may be re-appointed for up to three yearly terms. Terms begin, once appointed, at the beginning of each fiscal year.

Throughout the term, the chairs will work with the subcommittee to provide a progress report to the council and executive leadership liaison, indicating the outcomes of the council term, as well as make recommendations for future programs and initiatives for consideration
