The Diversity Engagement Survey

The Diversity Engagement Survey is More Than Just a Survey!

There is a growing recognition that diversity and inclusion are driving indicators of excellence in academic medicine, and there is an increasing need to measure institutional climate and culture around these factors. Thus, the Diversity Engagement Survey (DES) was developed as a tool to measure institutional climate and culture through the lens of diversity and inclusion.

By Completing the DES You Will:

  • Support UTMB’s efforts toward building a highly engaged, inclusive workforce and student body by identifying baseline strengths and weakness, as well as supporting a strategic direction for diversity and inclusion work.
  • Help UTMB measure progress of diversity plans in response to regulatory agencies such as the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the Joint Commission and the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP).
  • Raise awareness of diversity-related efforts across the institution.

About the Survey

The DES was developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), The University of Massachusetts Medical School and The University of Texas Medical Branch. The survey is being administered by DataStar, Inc., an independent survey management firm responsible for the collection, compilation, and analysis of the data. All responses will be completely confidential and will be sent directly to DataStar, so no one at UTMB will be able to track a response back to an individual. Results will be provided in aggregate form and will be compared to benchmark data from 14 AAMC member institutions.

The DES consists of inclusion and diversity-related questions. The inclusion items measure the campus environment as it relates to interpersonal, academic, and professional interactions. The diversity items measure the experience of individuals and groups on campus, the quality and extent of the interactions between individuals and groups and how individuals and groups are integrated in the institutions structure.

The entire survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete and will be open until midnight on Friday, Aug. 29. Paper copies of the survey also are available in Bethel Hall, Room 2.201, and in the Jamail Student Center
