Presented by the Galveston Chamber of Commerce with support from UTMB, the 2014 Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit conference is an uplifting, energetic event designed to inspire and educate through topics of special interest to today’s women. Dr. David Callender has provided 90 no-cost scholarships for eligible UTMB Health employees to attend the April 11 conference. Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Conference presentations on personal and business development, health and well-being are targeted to women seeking new levels of success and happiness. The event is designed to impart a sense of empowerment and balance in effecting change in attendees personal and professional lives.
New this year are high impact five-minute interactive business sessions designed for sharing and learning new leadership skills. Small group discussions will focus on marketing, branding, customer service communication, estate planning and testimonials from real business owners. The sessions will offer participants the opportunity to forge lasting connections, gain enhanced self-awareness of their roles, and to analyze their unique strengths. Leading the business sessions will be Connie Thomas and Karen Hix, Galveston College; Carol Ann Peters, Galveston Co. Small Business Development Center; Galveston Small Business Development Center; Amy Hart, former corporate trainer; Maureen McCutchen, attorney, Mills Shirley Law Firm; Doreen Hughes, Mainland Testing; and Alicia Cahill, owner, The Kitchen Chick.
Fashion and Marketing Consultant, and fashion/lifestyle blogger, Roz Pactor will present a personal improvement segment to the conference. A veteran of Paris, New York and Houston Fashion Week, Roz has been a featured stylist in national magazines and television. New age, new job, new look will be the theme for the Women’s Conference sweepstakes that will earn three lucky women the opportunity to receive a complete head to toe makeover by Roz and her team of professional stylists. Clothes, hair and makeup will transform three lucky ladies the day of the conference.
Sweepstakes winners will have their hair transformed by Lulu Benavides, entrepreneur and owner of Lulu’s the Salon, Inc. in Galveston. She founded her company 36 years ago. An acclaimed international and dynamic platform artist, lecturer and teacher, she is an active member of the National Cosmetology Association, founding member of the Professional Beauty Association and the prestigious family of Intercoiffure America. LuLu’s hair creations have appeared editorially in over sixty issues of leading international fashion journals and she was recently featured in the Latin magazines, Salon Plus and Vibra
Courtney Goodbar, independent hair colorist and makeup artist based at Windmiller’s Salon in Galveston, will also help glam up our sweepstakes winners. Courtney trained with Jose Heber and is a makeup stylist for Houston Fashion Week. Courtney’s celebrity clientele includes Candace Bushnell of Sex and the City, Momus Duchesses, and numerous politicians and celebutantes.
UTMB physicians will address medical issues that are at the forefront of women’s concerns. Dr. Angelica S. Robinson, Assistant Professor of Radiology, UTMB, will speak on breast health. Dr. Robinson is the Director of the UTMB Breast Imaging Section, Director-at-Large for the Gulf Coast Region of the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas, and serves as an advisory panel member for Texas Department of Health’s Breast and Cervical Services.
Named one of the “Best Doctors in America” 2005 – 2013, Dr. Vic Sierpina is popularly known for his weekly health column in the Galveston Co. Daily News. Board certified in both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine, his practice includes acupuncture, nutrition, botanical medicine and mind-body therapies. Dr. Sierpina will show how to use the proven principles of mindfulness to enjoy better health, relationships, communication, and peace of mind. His current book, The Healthy Cut Workbook, will be available during the conference and a book signing is planned following his talk.
Dr. Sami Gokhan Kilic, pioneer of robotic surgery, author of more than 40 publications in medical literature,
and editor of the textbook “Robotic Surgery”, performed the world’s first robotic cerclage operation on a
pregnant woman. His research has led to innovative medical techniques that avoid surgery in female health care,
such as utilizing nanotechnology for the treatment of fibroid uterus.
Kendra Scott is one of the most successful jewelry designers and business owners in the nation. Parlaying her artistic talent and business acumen into a profitable venture, Kendra will share the ups and downs of how she launched her company in 2002 with $500 to become a multi-million dollar brand. Based in Austin, Texas, her meticulously designed jewelry can be found globally.
Aisha Tyler, keynote speaker, is a native of San Francisco and holds a degree in government and environmental policy. Author, actor, comedian and activist, she currently serves as co-host of the popular CBS daytime talk show The Talk. Aisha, whose second book, Self-Inflicted Wounds, recently released, is an active volunteer for Wounded Warriors, Planned Parenthood, American Red Cross, The Trust for Public Land, and Doctors Without Borders. The title of her presentation is Pursuing Bravery: Embracing Risk and Fearlessness.
