International Travel

Going on a trip outside the United States? Contact Pager & Cellular Services at extension 7-9034 before leaving the U.S. to upgrade your cellular plan.

International calling codes, or country codes are digits that must be dialed to reach a telephone number in another country. For instance, if you are in France and want to call the U.S., you must dial the U.S. country code before dialing the U.S. phone number. To dial the U.S. from another county, you dial 001 + area code + phone number ("00" gets you an international line, "1" is the country code for USA.)

For calls to other countries, dial the country code, city code (similar to an area code) and the local number. This should hook you up with most phones in the Western world; naturally, there are exceptions as well as other rules depending on where you are calling and the type of phone you are calling. Check international codes with International Dialing Codes.

iPhone International Date Usage Tips

  • Turn Data Roaming "OFF":
By Default the setting for international data roaming will be in the "OFF" position.
To turn data roaming "ON/OFF" tap on, Settings > General > Network > Data Roaming
    • Turn "OFF" data roaming blocks email, browsing and downloads, but it will not block text or picture/video messages.
    • When abroad, international roaming rates apply when you send text or picture/video messages.

  • Utilize WiFi Instead of 3G/GPRS/EDGE:
WiFi is available in many international airports, hotels, and restaurants to browse the Web or check email.

  • Turn Fetch New Data "OFF":
Check email and sync contacts and calendars manually instead of having the data pushed to your iPhone automatically. This way you can control the flow of data coming to your iPhone.
To turn off Auto-Check, tap on Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data, then change Push to "OFF" and Check "Manually" for the Fetch method.

  • Consider Purchasing an International Data Package:
If you are travelling outside the U.S., purchasing a Data Global Plan will significantly reduce the cost of using data abroad.

  • Reset the Usage Tracker to Zero:
When you arrive overseas access the usage tracker in the general settings menu and select reset statistics. This will enable you to track your estimated data usage.
To reset the Usage Tracker, tap on Settings > General > Usage > Reset.
