William R. Elger, CPA, Executive Vice President and Chief Business and Finance Officer for UTMB, has been awarded the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation from the American Institute of CPAs and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. The CGMA designation recognizes professionals who have a deep understanding of finance and have expanded their business skills through experience as management accountants to help drive better business decisions.

A Certified Public Accountant, Elger graduated from the University of Illinois – Chicago. In his role at UTMB, Elger oversees a workforce of about 1,100 employees in eight major areas of operational support, including: finance; business operations and facilities; human resources; information services and security; police; financial planning and performance management; and managed care.
His career spans almost 40 years of service in medical education and health care services. He joined UTMB in March 2009, coming from the University of Arizona College of Medicine, where he served as senior associate dean for administration and finance. Prior to Arizona, Elger was with the University of Michigan Medical School at Ann Arbor, where he served as its chief financial officer and executive director for administration for nearly 20 years.
Elger is nationally-recognized and published for developing innovative financial management tools that afford real-time data in the decision-making process. He authored “Managing Resources in a Better Way: A New Financial Management Approach for the University of Michigan Medical School” in the April 2006 edition of Academic Medicine. He has also served as National Chair for the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Business Affairs and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Illinois CPA Society.
The Chartered Global Management Accountant designation was established by AICPA and CIMA, two of the world’s most prestigious accounting bodies, in January 2012 to elevate the profession of management accounting. The designation recognizes the most talented and committed management accountants with the discipline and skill to drive sustainable business success.
