A Message from Leadership: UTMB Earns ACGME Accreditation

October 28, 2013

We are pleased to share the great news that UTMB has earned a seven-year full institutional accreditation of its Graduate Medical Education program. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), which accredits all training programs in the United States, has granted our Institution the maximum accreditation cycle possible.  So, UTMB will not need to be reaccredited until 2020!

Achieving this outcome would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our GME staff members, program directors, faculty members and institutional leadership, who help create an environment where high quality patient care, superb resident education and the academic ideal of life-long learning coexist. With this seal of approval from the ACGME, UTMB will continue to train superb physicians in multiple specialties for the state of Texas and the nation.

The accreditation process examines faculty quality and teaching, educational curricula, patient care, resident evaluation processes, residency training outcomes and institutional oversight.  The review included interviews with faculty members, residents, program directors, GME staff members, and institutional leadership.  UTMB, which employs 572 physicians-in-training (residents), earned accolades for program director involvement in institutional oversight of the quality of resident training.

Congratulations and our thanks to everyone involved in our accreditation. This is a proud accomplishment for UTMB, and a testament to the quality of our educational programs.

Sincerely yours,
