4 Cancer researchers fall victim to fraudulent study
Houston Chronicle (Internet / Print) 01/21/06

Four researchers at Houston's University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center were victims of a fraudulent study in which the principal author fabricated data, a leading hospital official said Thursday. Dr. William Winslade, a bioethicist at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, called the recent incidents "alarming" and said they violate science's highest calling: the pursuit of truth. "There have been too many instances in recent years of scientists engaging in fraud to gain fame, power or money," said Winslade. "It undermines the credibility of the scientific enterprise. It's not like scientists are selling cars. They're supposed to be reporting truthful inquiries." Winslade said he didn't think the incident would hurt M.D. Anderson because they were just analyzing what was reported to them.
