New venture to bring 235 health-care jobs to Austin

Austin American-Statesman, Oct. 20, 2006http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/10/20/20seton.html A joint venture announced Thursday between the Seton Family of Hospitals and a national health care company will bring an inpatient rehabilitation facility and long-term-care hospital for chronically ill people to Austin, creating about 235 jobs. The $10 million combined facility, which will be fully operational in 2009 at a site to be determined, is expected to have 76 beds. The partnership is part of a growing trend in medicine that allows hospitals, which have seen their profits shrink in recent years, to expand services without bearing the expense alone. Seton last year launched a 30-year agreement with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston to expand the supply of medical residents training in Austin as a way to plug gaps in some specialties. Research shows that doctors tend to settle in areas where they received their training.
