Galveston County Daily News, Jan. 1, 2007 Editorial by Heber Taylor To understand the plight of the University of Texas Medical Branch, you have to understand two numbers. It’s hard to overstate the significance of those two numbers to the future of Galveston County’s largest employer. To understand why those numbers are critical to the future of the medical branch, look at them in context. UTMB has an annual budget of $1.4 billion. Of that, 58 percent is devoted to patient care. The medical branch will spend more than $800 million providing patient care.
