Galveston County Daily News, Jan. 10, 2007 AUSTIN, Texas — State Sen. Kyle Janek filed bills Monday that — if passed — would require the state to pay for the University of Texas Medical Branch’s indigent care while relieving its financial burden on taxpayers. Janek, a Houston Republican, has asked the 80th Texas Legislature to consider: Senate Bill 171, which designates UTMB as Texas’ health care “provider of last resort.” Senate Bill 172, which would require a patient’s home county or hospital district to pay for medical care from an outside agency. This bill would require the state comptroller to deduct the cost of that care from the county’s sales tax reimbursement. Janek said one of the problems at UTMB is the school is not getting reimbursed when it treats patients from other counties.
