Public invited to hear Tadataka Yamada, Gates Foundation executive

GALVESTON, Texas - The president of global health programs for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Tadataka Yamada, will speak about improving the health of people with infectious diseases in developing countries at a forum at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Yamada will make his presentation at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, in the William C. Levin North Auditorium, 11th and Market streets. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Yamada, the leader of the Gates Foundation's efforts to develop and deliver low-cost, life-saving health care solutions for the developing world, believes it is possible to make real-time improvements in the health status of people with such diseases as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

The forum is the first offering in the Don W. Powell lecture endowment which was established in honor of Dr. Powell by the Edward and Sally Futch Charitable Fund. Powell is interim director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UTMB.

Yamada oversees the Gates Foundation global health grant portfolio and is responsible for the foundation's global health advocacy. Previously, Yamada served as chairman of research and development and was a board member at GlaxoSmithKline. Prior to that, he was chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and Physician-in-Chief at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Yamada is a past president of the American Gastroenterological Association and the Association of American Physicians, a master of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in the United States and the Academy of Medical Sciences in the United Kingdom.
