GALVESTON, Texas — The UTMB Office of Educational Outreach is accepting applications for Summer Science Camp I for seventh and eighth graders and Summer Science Camp II for ninth and 10th graders. The application deadline is Monday, April 17.

Summer Science Camps I and II are open to students who attend public or private schools or who are home-schooled in any of the nine Galveston County school districts (Galveston ISD, La Marque ISD, Texas City ISD, High Island ISD, Dickinson ISD, Hitchcock ISD, Santa Fe ISD, Friendswood ISD and Clear Creek ISD). Students may apply to one of the two, half-day four-week sessions. The first session is June 5-30 and the second session is July 5-Aug. 1. The programs are free to participants.

Seventh and eighth graders may apply to one of two four-week sessions for Camp I. Students attend for four hours each day. Participants will learn about general biology, chemistry, physical science and basic laboratory safety techniques through a series of hands-on laboratory exercises and problem-solving activities. Activities include isolating DNA from onions, electrophoresis, labs on anti-microbial effects of spices and disinfectants on bacteria, catapult and marble machine building competitions, thin layer chromatography, effects of drugs on Daphnia and tours.

Ninth and 10th graders may apply to Camp II’s five-week session, June 12-July 14. Students attend for four hours each day. Participants will learn about molecular biology, molecular genetics, cell structure and function, the chromosomal basis of recombinant DNA technology and basic research laboratory procedures. Activities include basic chemistry labs, tissue culture, chromosome preparations, restriction enzyme digestion, DNA fingerprinting, gel electrophoresis, microbiology and sterile techniques, and an egg drop competitions.
