Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 06/01/06 Within six months, Galveston Bay Biodiesel, a fledgling island-based company backed by Chevron, a major oil company, and other investors, will begin churning out fuel partly made from soybeans. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who praised Chevron for taking the initiative to back the biodiesel effort, said there is a sense of urgency on Capitol Hill not only to keep gasoline prices affordable but to explore other options. Hutchison, who was born on the island, said she mentioned the new Galveston biodiesel facility during a recent network television interview, and that, combined with the University of Texas Medical Branch being awarded the National Biosafety Laboratory now under construction, the city is getting the recognition it deserves on a national scale.
