Beaumont Enterprise (Internet / Print) 05/25/06 The decision to evacuate the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston was anything but easy for Karen Sexton, chief executive officer. With no evacuation plan in hand, Sexton defied the history of the university and in just a few days before Hurricane Rita made landfall, the hospital successfully evacuated all patients in a matter of 12 hours. "Do we hunker down or evacuate?" Sexton recalled asking herself in her decision-making process. "To make a decision to transport the patient is sometimes a life-or-death decision for the patient." About 50 participants in the Texas Hurricane Conference listened to Sexton's dramatic and sometimes tear-filled presentation Wednesday on what is involved in evacuating a major medical facility.
