Houston Chronicle (Internet / Print) 05/18/06 http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/3871391.html When Elsie Yvonne Ponce received the Hispanic Heritage Youth Award for engineering Wednesday, she paid homage to her family, including four older sisters who excelled academically in their own right and served as role models for their younger sister. She still remembers when her family threw a party for her sister Azucena, 26, when she decided on A&M and became the first in her family to attend college. "I saw my parents and how proud they were that she graduated from high school and that she was going to pursue more education," Elsie Ponce said. She remains closest to the second-oldest daughter, Cindy, 25, who still lives at home but commutes to Galveston where she is a researcher at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
