Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 05/07/06 Besides its cutting-edge research into the deadliest version of the avian flu virus, the University of Texas Medical Branch is conducting studies involving a host of potentially lethal bugs. All of this work is done inside the 2,000-square-foot biosafety level four laboratory, part of the university’s center for biodefense and emerging infectious diseases. The BSL4 designation — the highest in the scientific world — means the lab is qualified to handle these deadly infectious agents. Researcher Slobodan Paessler, who is conducting a one-year study to determine the effect of certain drugs on animals infected with the deadly H5N1 bird flu strain, is no stranger to infectious diseases.
