Volunteers are among the unsung heroes of the entire health care system, and without their hours of dedication, many patients would experience a sharp drop in the quality of their hospital stay, wrote UTMB Dr. Michael Warren in his It’s Your Health column. “Though volunteers are not directly involved in the patient’s health care, hospitals depend on them greatly to provide a lot of services that might otherwise not exist. It’s not difficult to become a volunteer. Most hospitals have a volunteer office easily accessible to the public. When you find it, offer your unique expertise and describe your special interests. … Be a volunteer; you’ll never regret it.”
