McAllen Monitor (Internet / Print) 07/17/06 http://www.themonitor.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Details.cfm&StoryID=14268&Section=Local Facing a dire shortage of full-time psychiatrists, the Valley’s community mental-health provider, Tropical Texas Center for Mental Health and Mental Retardation, is planning to offer psychiatric telemedicine to its patients. Once a contract is finalized, the center likely will partner with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston on the program, which will be offered at the Harlingen, Brownsville and Edinburg clinics. Through the program, a Galveston-based psychiatrist will meet electronically with patients all over the Valley, using cameras and equipment supplied by UTMB. Tropical Texas psychiatrists already see a few patients via television when needed, but the new system will reach many more patients, officials said.
