Medical education dean chosen

Austin American-Statesman (Internet / Print) 07/19/06 The CEO and acting dean of the University of Hawaii medical school has been named the new dean of medical programs in Austin. The job resulted from an expanded collaboration between the Seton Family of Hospitals and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Dr. T. Samuel Shomaker will be based at Brackenridge Hospital and will oversee programs involving medical students and resident doctors training in the Seton-run hospitals, said Dr. Valerie Parisi, dean of the UTMB School of Medicine in Galveston. Parisi said that Shomaker will become the first UTMB official working full time in the medical education program in Austin and that will report directly to her. He is expected to play a prominent role in choosing an assistant dean for administration and finance in Austin. UTMB is assuming leadership of Seton's medical education programs and is expanding the number of specialities and residents being educated locally.
