UTMB researchers looked at more than 73,000 elective hernia repairs and discovered almost 2/3 of the patients had preoperative laboratory tests. That unnecessary pre-op testing occurs has been understood for many years. The UTMB paper points out that the estimated cost of preoperative testing is anywhere from $3 billion to $18 billion. The UTMB group recommended that surgical societies establish guidelines for pre-op testing.
