Galveston County Daily News (Internet / Print) 03/19/06 Russell LaForte says people would do well to remember that old saying about an apple a day keeping the doctor away. In fact, he said, they might want to eat more than one. “The apple is a symbol of a healthy diet,” he said, “and it’s one of the main things people don’t get enough of. People eat about half of the fruit they should.” LaForte should know. He’s the medical director of the executive wellness program at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He’s also on the staff at UTMB’s Center for Weight Management. “A lot of people think they can make up for the lack of fruit in their diets by taking vitamins, but no one has ever been able to find evidence that that works,” LaForte said. “When the human body digests fruit, something magical happens that medical science doesn’t begin to understand.” So stock up on apples and other fresh fruits, and while you’re at it, toss in a few more vegetables and maybe even some milk.
