Health policy lunch
“The hunger game: Examining the paradox of hunger and obesity in the U.S.” will be the topic for Eric Cooper, executive director of the San Antonio Food Bank, at the Healthy Health Policy lunch and lecture series, noon to 1 p.m. Thursday in room 1.206 of Research Building Six (formerly Children’s Hospital). Transplant support
The inaugural meeting of the Texas Transplant Center support group meets 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Multispecialty Center at Victory Lakes Town Center, 2660 Gulf Freeway South in League City. The group is open to all pre- and post-transplant patients. For more information, go to utmbhealth.com.

Free oral cancer screenings
In observance of the 16th Annual Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, UTMB Health will be offering free oral cancer screenings 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday at the Ear, Nose & Throat Consultants Clinic in League City, Suite D, Brittany Plaza at 1600 West League City Parkway. The screening is painless and only takes about 15 minutes. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred. Diabetes support group
“Hypoglycemia and medications” is the topic for this month’s meeting of the UTMB diabetes support group on Monday, April 8. The group meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month in Suite 9 of the UTMB Multispecialty Center and Stark Diabetes Clinic, 2660 Gulf Freeway South in League City. Gastrointestinal cancer support group
“Understanding colon and rectal cancer: A guide for patients” will be the topic of Dr. Aakash H. Gaijar, a colorectal surgeon at UTMB, at the next meeting of the GI cancer support group at their next meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, in room 1.132 of the Rebecca Sealy Building, at the corner of Market and Eighth streets. Application deadline Friday
The deadline to apply for the free UTMB STEM Quest summer camps for middle and high school students in Galveston County is Friday. For complete information on the camps and registration details go to utmb.edu/oeo/students.

National Public Health Week
“Public health is ROI: Save lives, save money” is this year’s theme for National Public Health Week. UTMB’s department of preventive medicine and community health will sponsor the Public Health Week Symposium to be held Wednesday, 3 to 5 p.m. in Levin Hall, Market and 10th Street. Glen P. Mays of the University of Kentucky School of Public Health will speak after poster presentations from 3 to 4 p.m.

Healthy kitchens
“Healthy kitchens, healthy lives” is the topic of Dr. Daniel Eisenberg, executive vice president for health research and education at the Samueli Institute at Harvard University. The community is invited to attend this lecture and luncheon hosted by the UTMB department of family medicine. Seating is limited and registration is required for this free event at noon on Thursday, April 4 at the Galveston Island Community Center, 4700 Broadway.
