Sally Robinson and Keith Bly: Drowning was the second leading cause of unintentional injury death among U.S. children between 1 and 19 years old from 1990 to 2000, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Children up to 4 years old and adolescent boys are at the highest risk of drowning.
