Nurse practitioners part of solution to lower costs

Houston Business Journal, July 19, 2013

While much of the focus on saving money or creating efficiencies within the health care system comes from developing new administrative processes, sometimes it can be the people who make the difference. New data from UTMB shows that states with less restrictive regulations on nurse practitioners’ scope of practice have more than twice the number of patients receiving care. More primary care providers translates into lower Medicare expenditures and lower mortality rates, researchers said. And states with fewer regulations on the nurse practitioners are able to extend primary care services to a wider portion of the population, said Yong-Fang Kuo, lead author of the UTMB study. Simply put, nurse practitioners save the health care system money. [Note: Paid subscription required.]
