Houston Chronicle (Internet / Print) 02/12/06 Guest Column by Dr. Stanley Lemon: Although smallpox and anthrax have captured the attention — and funding — of a government intent on protecting its citizens against bioterrorist attacks, many public health experts would hold that Mother Nature — in the guise of pandemic influenza — may be the mother of all bioterrorists. The growing magnitude of the possibilities — both good and bad — that are offered by greater knowledge of biological regulatory systems, the ability to manipulate microorganisms in ways unimagined a few decades ago and the potential to construct wholly synthetic life forms, demands of life scientists greater responsibility and broader realization of the implications of their work.
