UTMB’s colorful pediatric “hospital within a hospital,” with a soothing atmosphere and compassionate doctors and staff, has 16 general inpatient beds and eight additional beds — four for pediatric intensive care patients and four for “flex” patients who require extra monitoring. “As doctors and nurses, we’re able to address our patients’ medical needs, but there is so much more going on with a sick child,” says Dr. Susie Gerik. “For example, many children are frightened of needles. We aren’t necessarily able to help them deal with that, but that’s why we have someone like Lisette Perez, our child life specialist. With her help, we’re able to address our patients’ emotional needs as well. We have a real sense of teamwork here and everyone contributes his or her area of expertise.” (See page 32.)
