Narrative

The General Catalog of The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) contains a written overview of admission requirements for current and prospective undergraduate, graduate, international students at the University. It is also accessible by the general public. Supplemental information about admissions requirements is found in the General Catalog and in the individual school bulletins, all of which are which are available on the UTMB Enrollment Services website (1). The admissions policies are consistent with the University's mission, vision, and values statements (2) and with its educational goals (3). These goals, including to “provide innovative educational programs and curricula,” “expand interprofessional educational opportunities,” and “educate our patients, families and key communities about attainment of better health,” are manifest in rigorous and academically challenging learning curricula, interprofessional educational opportunities, and interdisciplinary community-based service projects such as the clinics at St. Vincent’s House. Admission policies applied to all students and include requirements related to academic performance, interpersonal and communications skills, and extracurricular activities or community service, all of which are consistent with fulfilling these goals.

Institutional admissions policies adhere to generally recognized standards for admissions as they relate to the completion of the State of Texas Core Curriculum for bachelor’s degrees, prerequisites for advanced degrees, policies for financial aid, and admissions of students with disabilities. Where applicable, admission policies cover all student classifications: transfers, non-degree seeking, probation, conditional, undergraduate, graduate, professional, and distance-education. Each of UTMB’s four schools and their programs also adhere to the admission practices required by their respective discipline-based accrediting bodies.

The School of Nursing (SON) Faculty Assembly provides oversight of admission criteria, based on recommendations from the Admissions and Progressions Committee (4). Oversight for the Ph.D. program in the SON is provided by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) and follow GSBS’s basic requirements for admission for all its programs as outlined in the its Bylaws (5). According to the Bylaws of the School of Health Professions (SHP), the individual departments in SHP have the responsibility and authority to establish standards for selecting students for their respective educational programs, including recommending students for admissions, within the limitations set by the UT System Regents’ Rules and Regulations (6). Admission policies for the School of Medicine (SOM) are established by the University of Texas System through the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS) and a link to the TMDSAS website is available on the SOM home page (7).

The SOM Bulletin describes the admission requirements for the Doctor of Medicine degree (8). The SHP Bulletins includes admission policies for baccalaureate, master’s, and doctorate programs as applicable (9a)(9b)(9c)(9d)(9e)(9f)(9g). The SON Bulletin describes admission requirement s for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) Degree (10a), Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) Degree (10b), Post Master’s Certificate (10c), and Ph.D. in Nursing awarded through Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (10d). The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) Bulletin (11) describes the admission requirements for Master’s and Doctoral that applies to all of their graduate programs.

There are newly developed programs being offered in both the SHP and the SON that are not yet included in their respective bulletins, although admissions information for all of them is available in writing on each school’s website. They have all been approved by the University of Texas System and by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as well as by their professional accrediting bodies, if appropriate.
