These continue to be exciting times for UTMB, and the FY2013 edition
of The Road Ahead positions the university to make the most of its
revitalization and to best address the transformation taking place in health
sciences education, research and patient care.
The institutional plan is a three-year strategic view that incorporates external
factors such as the economy, the marketplace, changing demographics,
regulations and the national emphasis on quality and productivity
among academic health centers. To meet the challenges of this dynamic
environment, UTMB has created an ongoing process for developing,
implementing and adapting our plans. This agility is one of the reasons
UTMB has been and will continue to be successful.
Our strategic vision is closely aligned with Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa’s
Framework for the Future, thus ensuring that our efforts build on the strength
and support of The University of Texas System as we join them to improve
education, research, health care and the economic vitality in our state.
Those familiar with the FY2012 edition of The Road Ahead will see that
changes to the goals themselves have been minimal. Adjustments have
been made as appropriate to reflect progress to date, but the overall plan is
still strong. Our focus for the coming year will be determining how best to
balance our strategic priorities and limited resources. Greater collaboration
and integration of planning efforts among mission areas is essential to
our ability to make sound decisions and achieve our goals. We will work
this year to ensure that all mission areas have a well-defined process for
ensuring that priorities are clear and that they complement the efforts of
others.
We will use The Road Ahead to maintain our focus on our priorities, guide
our action plans and measure our success as we define our opportunities for
the future. Each faculty and staff member plays a critical role in our journey,
and our leadership team looks forward to working with all of you to bring our
vision to life.
